FSU Computer Vision Lab

Syntheta grew out of research at the Florida State University computer vision lab, located in the William-Johnston Building. The lab develops tools and techniques to create synthetic datasets for training computer vision models.

The synthetic data is mixed with a smaller number of authentic images to train models more efficiently — addressing the fundamental problem that quality images in sufficient quantity simply do not exist for many domains.

The lab's work began with search-and-rescue algorithms and has expanded into YOLO and OpenCV projects, explainable AI, and usability research. In May 2021, the first graduate of the lab founded a company that was inducted into the NVIDIA Inception accelerator program.

Syntheta Historic Document Archive

The Syntheta Archive is an AI-powered transcription system for handwritten historic documents — journals, letters, and manuscripts from 1750–1950. Using Google Gemini, it converts scanned handwritten pages into searchable text, making historic records accessible for researchers and genealogists.
